Injury? Rest isn’t best

Pain or an injury doesn’t automatically mean you need to stop exercising.

It usually means we need to change what you do, how much you do, or how you do it.

That’s where your Trainable Menu comes in.

Your Trainable Menu is simply the collection of exercises you can currently do safely, confidently and productively.

If something hurts, our job isn’t to force you through it.

But our job also isn’t to stop everything.

Instead, we find what you can do and keep you moving.

For example, if you have a knee injury, you might temporarily change the way you squat, reduce the weight or range of motion, or use a different lower-body exercise altogether.

You can still train your upper body.

You can still strengthen your hips and legs.

You can still work on your fitness.

You can still get stronger.

And as things improve, we gradually expand your Trainable Menu again.

Why we want you to keep training with an injury

Staying active helps maintain your:

  • strength
  • muscle
  • fitness
  • confidence
  • mobility
  • independence

It can also be an important part of improving many common aches, pains and injuries.

The alternative — stopping completely — often means losing strength and confidence, which can make returning to exercise harder.

So our approach is simple:

We respect pain. We don’t fear it.

We listen to what your body is telling us, adjust your program when needed, and continue training everything that we reasonably can.

The goal (even when you have an injury)

We don’t need every exercise to be available to you today.

We just need enough things on your Trainable Menu to keep making progress.

Can’t squat comfortably today? We’ll find another option.

Shoulder doesn’t like one press? We’ll find one it does like.

Coming back from an injury? We’ll build things up gradually.

You don’t have to wait until your body feels perfect before you can benefit from exercise.

Train what you can. Build what you can. Expand from there.
